Director/Vice President, Health Actuary

Avalere Health is seeking a Health Actuary at the Director or Vice President level to serve as the actuarial subject matter expert within the firm’s Data Analytics and Development practice.

Avalere Health is seeking a Health Actuary at the Director or Vice President level to serve as the actuarial subject matter expert within the firm’s Data Analytics and Development practice. Successful candidates will thrive in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to apply actuarial concepts and formulate solutions to address health policy issues and business needs for a diverse set of clients. He or she should have specific background related to government programs (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP) and/or fully insured markets (individual, small group, large group), as well as experience working on health policy issues. Experience in Medicare Part D rate-setting is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a record of inventive problem solving. The candidate must be able to apply actuarial concepts and methods to a range of complex health policy and business issues, formulate creative and reusable strategies, multi-task, translate work products into meaningful guidance for clients, develop and deliver presentations, and write effectively. The candidate must be capable of developing new business opportunities, managing client relationships and leading and mentoring junior staff in a team-oriented environment. The Health Actuary will report to the Senior Vice President of Health Economics and Advanced Analytics.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize the scope of projects for health plan and life science clients, assemble a cross-functional team, and overseeing the team from project initiation through completion of client deliverables
  • Deploy to new and existing clients to lead or participate in business development activities
  • Achieve a specific sales and revenue target across health plans, provider and life sciences clients to be determined by the SVP of Data Analytics
  • Work collaboratively with the Health Plans Practice and Avalere’s parent company, Inovalon, to support business development efforts and deliver top quality client deliverables
  • Design and conduct actuarial analyses that quantify the impact of policy and/or market changes
  • Contribute and lead strategic actuarial advisory services and analytic insight to our growing outcomes/risk-based contracting portfolio of services 
  • Participate and lead project teams in the production of deliverables for a diverse set of clients
  • Formulate creative and flexible actuarial models and tools for reuse with a diverse set of clients
  • Provide strategic insight into the application of actuarial concepts and methods to expand opportunities with existing and new clients

Skills, Experience, and Other Job Related Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, economics, computer science, or an equivalent related field 
  • 8 to 10 plus years of work experience, ideally with health plan/Part D experience
  • Demonstrated experience advising executive level stakeholders in health insurer, provider, government, or similar environments
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong communication and presentation skills 
  • Proficiency in statistical software, Excel, and/or other software languages
  • Experience with risk adjustment, benefit design and pricing, competitive market analysis, and pharmaceutical analysis preferred

  • Strong ability to lead and mentor junior staff in a matrixed environment
  • Strong ability to manage challenging client situations
  • Strong ability to translate complex information to a wide range of clients
  • Expert knowledge of actuarial concepts and methods and their application to a variety of health policy and health care business issues
  • Strong strategy development and execution of new business areas
  • ASA or FSA designation preferred
  • This candidate will preferably work in our Washington, D.C. office, but remote candidates will be considered
