The shift to value-based payment models and the imperative to constrain the growth of healthcare spending have fueled intense activity around the need to assess the value of different treatment options for individual patients. In 2015, several organizations developed or intensified their development of frameworks that attempt to objectively assess the value of specific therapies and other healthcare services.
In that context, Avalere and FasterCures held a workshop at FasterCures’ 2015 Partnering for Cures meeting to assess the current state of the field, including existing gaps. Workshop participants – largely patients/patient advocates and life sciences representatives – voiced a need to develop a value framework that fully incorporates patient perspectives on value.
As a follow-up to the workshop, FasterCures and Avalere have developed an action plan to convene a varied group of stakeholders for the development of the first value framework that truly includes and addresses patient value considerations. Our aim is to release the patient-perspective value framework during the fall of 2016. The following report presents our draft action plan and how it was conceived.
