Payer Insights on the Use of Patient Data

Avalere recently partnered with the National Pharmaceutical Council to examine payers’ perspectives regarding the use of patient data and how it can be used to shape care delivery, improve system efficiencies, and achieve better health outcomes.

In recent years, we’ve seen a tremendous spike in the volume and types of patient data available. This influx in information has created opportunities as well as challenges for stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum to find ways better utilize this information.  

Avalere and the National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) worked together to write, “Health Plan Use of Patient Data: From the Routine to the Transformational,” to provide a road map for the following stakeholders: patient groups, providers, policy makers, and health plans.

To better understand the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of patient data, Avalere and NPC interviewed a range of experts familiar with this topic. The group represented a mix of executives from either a health plan or health data analytics firm. These experts provided inputs on the benefits, limitations, and labor resources associated with seven use cases for patient data. Below is a table of some of the top-level findings:
