Associate Principal / Principal, Patient-Support Programs and Market Access

Avalere Health is seeking an Associate Principal or Principal to join its Market Access Practice.

The  practice focuses on a wide range of areas, such as coverage, coding, and payment across commercial and public payers; pricing and contracting; distributors and specialty pharmacies; field team design and deployment; and patient support services. This team assesses how our clients’ products fit within the emerging coverage and reimbursement landscape and help our clients optimize market access for their products though deep subject-matter expertise and understanding of their business issues.

Among Avalere’s many capabilities, our dedicated team of patient-support subject-matter experts serve as trusted advisors on strategy development, design, and implementation of various patient support initiatives led by our clients. In addition, Avalere provides our market access expertise to help evaluate and assess the impact of market trends on the evolving landscape of patient support as well as help clients ideate on solutions challenges in this space.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject-matter expert on manufacturer and third-party organization patient-support services, including variations of patient-support services programs and offerings, as well as program design, operations, and business strategy
  • Provide thought leadership on best practices for developing, enhancing, and optimizing patient-support service offerings, including benefit verification, specialty pharmacy trade and distribution, patient financial assistance (e.g., copay support, free drug support), medication adherence, and social needs support (e.g., transportation support, counseling)
  • Assist in evaluation and analysis of patient support data integration, aggregation, and management, including HIT, HIPAA HITECH, and EHRs, and use of digital health and technology platforms
  • Evaluate and analyze patient-service program quality and metrics, including creating customer models and providing insights on the best model to execute
  • Provide operational, legal, and strategic considerations around standing up internal or external patient support service capabilities, including field-based team (e.g., field reimbursement managers) program development/optimization, and team training
  • Analyze shifts in policy, regulations, and guidance developments on the ability for manufacturer and third-party clients to operationalize patient support services
  • Provide insights into the calculation and impact of patient support services on gross-to-nets, net pricing capabilities, and overall profitability, including budget management and program profitability, and how these investments inform broader brand planning
  • Conceptualize, design, and execute—from start to finish—a broad range of patient support client projects involving diverse cross-functional (e.g., relating to analytics) and cross-practice (e.g., relating to policy, coverage, and reimbursement) teams
  • Drive change management and execution of near- and long-term patient-support solutions based on market changes, health policies, and regulatory shifts
  • Co-lead business development efforts with other Avalere subject-matter experts and account managers
  • Assist in the development and review of scopes of work, budgets, timelines, and other business documents to drive and generate new business opportunities in the patient-support services space
  • Lead cross-functional teams to solve complex client problems and engage clients with novel solutions and ideas related to patient support services strategy, trends, challenges, and operational considerations
  • Work with subject-matter experts, technical staff, vendors/partners, client teams, and others within Avalere to ensure the operational and financial success of projects and programs under management
  • Manage multiple clients and short- and long-term deliverables to ensure Avalere’s vast knowledge and expertise are available to meet client needs
  • Solve complex client issues in a timely and appropriate manner with minimal management oversight and attention to resources
  • Develop and maintain a professional level of knowledge regarding Avalere’s and Inovalon’s services and products

Skills, Experience, and Other Job-Related Requirements

Skill Requirements

Subject matter expertise should reflect an expert-level understanding of:

  • The patient support services and related industries, including but not limited to third-party vendors and add-on services, 501(c)3 programs, data aggregators, payers, distributors, SPs, technology platforms, and EHRs
  • Broader access strategy and how patient-support services play a role in a product or portfolio’s market access strategy
  • Insurance and benefit design, including medical and pharmacy benefit
  • Marketing and product positioning, including consumer and customer marketing
  • Specific market and policy dynamics related to oral and physician-administered therapies and specialty/high-price drugs
  • Knowledge of how state-level policy and regulatory development may impact patient support capabilities and broader market access strategies
  • Management of manufacturer patient support services-related financial data and budgets, including revenue, P&L, and program and product funding allocation
  • Market access, policy, government affairs, brand teams, customer account teams (e.g., payers, providers, public sector), trade and distribution, and other commercial functions as they pertain to patient-support services

Experience Requirements

  • 10–15 years of relevant work experience as a senior leader at a leading pharmaceutical or biologics manufacturer within the patient support services team, brand or customer marketing, or field services
  • Candidates with more than 15 years of patient-support services vendor or third-party administrator experience may be considered, if other qualifications are met
