Policy/Policy Analytics Internship Program

The Policy Practice focuses on a range of issues including federal and state action related to the benefit designs in public and private payers, Medicare Advantage and Part D policy and payment, Medicare reform issues (including implementation of reforms in the Inflation Reduction Act), health insurance exchange issues, patient support programs, Medicaid and other state health policies, and federal budget and deficit reduction issues. We rely on deep subject matter expertise and understanding of the business issues facing our customers to assess how this changing policy landscape impacts the pharmaceutical industry, managed care plans, providers, and consumers. We provide analytic support and advisory services, including legislative strategy, regulatory analysis, and quantitative modeling of proposed and enacted policies to a wide range of clients across the healthcare industry.

The Health Policy Practice Interns will work alongside a broad set of subject matter experts in Avalere’s Policy Practice, gaining insight into pressing issues that the practice helps clients understand and navigate. The Health Policy Intern will also contribute to firm products and client deliverables and work with subject matter experts to curate a practicum that can be leveraged as a personal writing sample. Within the policy practice, Avalere will be considering applications for healthcare generalists, health policy generalists as well as an interns to join our policy analytics team.

Our internship program is a 10-week program commencing in June 2023 that will provide students the opportunity for professional development by building relationships, gaining corporate experience, learning about our industry, and preparing students with the experience needed to have a rewarding career with a purposefully built commercialization partner for the biopharmaceutical, medical technology, and wellness industries.

For the duration of the program, you will be given the knowledge, support, and training required to supercharge your career in your chosen area of specialization. Alongside having full access to our Career Experience Team, a suite of internal career experience platforms, and D&I employee network groups, you will be mentored by an expert in your chosen field.

What you’ll do:

  • Work independently and in cross-practice teams to contribute to the development and delivery of projects to clients.
  • Support project teams with research requests
  • Draft written summaries, white papers, and PowerPoint presentations to provide strategic recommendations to clients
  • Translate and communicate the implications of policy changes on clients’ businesses and strategic priorities
  • Use content expertise, solid proofreading, and layout skills to build client deliverables
  • Develop a practicum based on a topic area of interest/practice need that includes a research component, development of a deliverable (e.g., memo, presentation), and a final presentation to the Policy and E&S Practice respectively

Policy Practice Intern Duties and Responsibilities

  • Curate and expand knowledge on policy-related issues impacting healthcare stakeholders (e.g., patients, drug manufacturers, health plans/payers, providers) with both a state and federal policy/regulatory focus
  • Work alongside Avalere’s Policy 360 and State Reform 360 teams to summarize key health policy developments and evaluate the broader impact to stakeholders
  • Attend internal trainings to expand knowledge of key policy issues and grow personal subject matter expertise

Education Requirements

  • Coursework toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree related to policy and policy analytics
