Research Scientist I, Health Economics & Advanced Analytics

The Research Scientist I will join our growing Health Economics and Advanced Analytics (HEAA) practice. The HEAA practice consists of staff with specialized experience, such as health economists, data scientists, health service researchers, and project managers. The Research Scientist I will participate in the conceptualization, execution, and delivery of analyses in health economics, comparative effectiveness, performance measure development and testing, outcomes research, and epidemiology, as well as qualitative and strategy-based work products for clients. We also work closely with other practices within Avalere and Inovalon, applying the full scope of the firm’s knowledge base to the development of multi-disciplinary, creative solutions on behalf of our clients.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes technical SME to projects
  • Contributes to scopes and ideates project design and methods
  • Authors study reports and scientific publications, abstracts, and posters
  • Identifies and develops solutions to key strategic business problems using high-level modeling and statistical analyses techniques
  • Utilizes SQL to perform advanced-level data extraction, transformation and data management; fully documents and manages library of source code and algorithms for future use
  • Develops and tests hypotheses in support of research and product offerings, and communicate findings in a clear, precise, and actionable manner to our clients
  • Produces deliverable with some guidance
  • With some oversight, interfaces with clients to design research studies, protocols, predictive and advanced analytics, observational research, reports and, publications
  • Supports and may manage technical tasks on projects

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, applied mathematics, econometrics, statistics, engineering, physics, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3–5 years of professional experience in healthcare or pharmaceutical industries; experience working with administrative claims data and big data preferred
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Strong understanding of and experience in researching and resolving data issues with a logical, instinctive, and problem-solving mentality working with large, complex and incomplete sources
  • Business analytical skills (process flows, procedures, spreadsheets, modeling, etc.) and good understanding of design and architecture principles
  • Exhibits good project management skills, with an ability to work independently on multiple projects with competing priorities and a strong commitment to meeting goals and deadlines
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Strong understanding of database management tools (e.g., Hadoop, Hive or MapReduce)
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to understand and interpret results based on advanced statistical techniques
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in IT and business environments; ability to communicate to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment
  • Knowledge of health care, health policy, pharmaceutical, medical device, and related issues
  • Strong ability to manage challenging client situations
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and recommend solutions
  • Strong ability to translate complex information for a wide range of clients
