Senior Research Scientist, Health Economics & Advanced Analytics

Avalere Health is seeking an experienced Senior Research Scientist to join our growing Health Economics & Advanced Analytics (HEAA) Practice.

The HEAA practice comprises staff with specialized experience in solving analytic and business challenges for healthcare stakeholders (e.g., biopharmaceutical companies, health plans, health systems, medical societies) using internal and external, large scale, real-world datasets.  In addition to data scientists, our team comprises health economists, health service researchers, evidence strategists, and project managers. We work closely with other functional areas within Avalere and Inovalon, applying the full scope of the firm’s knowledge base to the development of multi-disciplinary, creative solutions on behalf of our clients.  We are seeking a senior research scientist to contribute subject-matter expertise to the conceptualization, execution, and delivery of analyses in health economics, applied mathematics, comparative effectiveness, performance measure development and testing, outcomes research, predictive analytics, and epidemiology.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with clients and internal colleagues to design and execute health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) studies involving predictive and advanced analytic modeling, pharmacoeconomic or microsimulation modeling, and retrospective claims-based analyses
  • Lead or lend subject-matter expertise to the direction and conceptualization of proposals, statements of work, and budgets
  • Lead the development of or lend subject-matter expertise to HEOR study protocols, statistical analysis plans, and client deliverables
  • Develop and author study reports, scientific publications, conference abstracts, and posters
  • Independently manage workflow and make direct contributions to the research process
  • Design and ensure rigorous internal quality control protocols
  • Work with the HEAA leadership team to identify areas for delivering innovation to clients
  • Supervise a team of programmers, data scientists, or research associates as needed

Skills, Experience, and Other Job-Related Requirements

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in economics, health economics, data science, health policy, health services research, pharmacy administration, pharmacoeconomics, public health, applied mathematics, epidemiology, statistics, or related discipline

Skill Requirements

  • Broad technical knowledge of health economics, outcomes research, and predictive analytic designs
  • Proficiency in design and execution of economic modeling studies, predictive analytics studies, and observational research using large administrative pharmacy and medical claims/EMR and public and private databases
  • Advanced knowledge of advanced statistical techniques or econometric skills
  • Excellent writing, project management, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to independently manage multiple work streams with limited supervision

  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical reasoning, and decision-making skills, and strong commitment to meeting goals and deadlines

  • Positive, flexible and self-motivated attitude, with excellent teamwork skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment 

Experience Requirements

  • 10+ years consulting, healthcare, pharmaceutical/device industry, or health insurance industry experience
  • Experience presenting research at scientific conferences and a record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience leading teams of programmers or data scientists
  • Hands-on experience using statistical software packages such as SAS or STATA
  • SQL programming experience
  • R and Python programming experience preferred
  • Client/customer-facing experience strongly preferred
