Avalere Health Hires HEAA Researchers Joseph Tkacz and Jason Swindle

Duo joins as principals, bringing years of expertise in health economics and outcomes research.

Joseph Tkacz and Jason Swindle have joined Avalere’s Health Economics & Advanced Analytics (HEAA) practice as principals, bringing with them several decades of research experience focusing on health economics and outcomes.

Joseph and Jason join the practice’s team of experts that spans economics, actuarial science, policy, market access and reimbursement, payment and delivery, and value-based care, answering complex questions supported by patient data. They will lead the design and implementation of various studies to address issues on costs and quality of healthcare, disparities in healthcare services, economic trends in cost and utilization, and other key areas.

About Joseph Tkacz

Joseph Tkacz has worked extensively with life sciences clients, health plan partners, and a diversity of database suppliers to design observational research studies, health economic evaluations, and market landscape assessments. His expertise lies in the design and execution of observational, retrospective database analyses, and the translation of scientific results to a wide variety of audiences.

Joseph has more than 15 years of experience in health outcomes and health services research spanning the academic, non-profit, and private sectors. He has authored or co-authored over 120 conference abstracts and nearly 40 scholarly manuscripts in a variety of clinical and health services journals, including The Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Leukemia & Lymphoma, The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, and The American Journal of Managed Care.

Prior to joining Avalere, Joseph was a research leader at IBM Watson Health where he led the design and implementation of health economics, health outcomes, and epidemiological studies for life sciences clients. He also served as director of analytics for Health Analytics, LLC, where he managed multiple, concurrent health outcomes research studies and associated analytic staff.

Joseph has also received research awards from professional societies including the International Society for Pharmacoeconomic and Outcomes Research, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, and the Southeastern Psychological Association.

Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Coastal Carolina University, and a Master of Science in experimental psychology from Augusta University. He is also a certified clinical research professional through the Society of Clinical Research Associates.

About Jason Swindle

Jason Swindle has extensive experience in study design, execution, and dissemination in economic and clinical outcomes research, with a distinct focus on cardiovascular research. Prior to joining Avalere, he worked at Optum where he focused on economics and outcomes research related to cardiovascular health and endocrine and metabolic therapies.

He has published more than 30 research articles published in journals including JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, The American Heart Journal, and Transplantation.

He received a PhD in health services research from Saint Louis University, where his dissertation focused on resource utilization and outcomes among a heterogeneous heart failure population. In addition to his PhD, Jason received a Master of Public Health in biostatistics and epidemiology from Saint Louis University and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Creighton University.
