Life Sciences Company Gains Insights on Patient Treatment Preferences
Summary
A life sciences company sought to increase utilization of its triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) drug, especially among women who are Black. Our research helped the client understand patient values and preferences and how they affect patients’ treatment selection.Client Type
A major American life sciences company
Challenge
Characterize the needs of patients with TNBC to address low product utilization, and share findings on treatment gaps with providers, introducing the client’s TNBC drug as an option to fill these gaps where possible.
Solution
We conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of treatment preferences and utilization. Next, we quantified patients’ rankings of treatment attributes listed in the Patient Perspective Value Framework and administered a custom survey to patients with TNBC to gain insight on the relative value of these attributes to patients, and on how these values impact treatment selection.
We then conducted literature reviews and facilitated focus groups to identify the attributes of TNBC treatments (e.g., cost, side effects, route of administration) that most impact patients’ treatment choices. Focus group participants discussed a range of factors that influenced their treatment selections, identifying survival chance as the top factor followed by quality of life, treatment duration, and provider opinion. Participants revealed that their priorities often shifted during treatment and specified a variety of other factors that were often, sometimes, or rarely relevant to their treatment choices.
Several participants who are Black noted that when they made their initial TNBC treatment selections, they were unaware that side effects vary among treatments and that tumors can respond differently depending on race, which may have influenced their treatment selections.
Outcome
The client gained insight on the values of patients with TNBC and corresponding treatment preferences. Our analysis provided key information needed for the client to develop strategies to serve those preferences and better support patients living with TNBC.
