On December 16, Avalere policy experts, including Senior Adviser Dr. Angela Shen, published a piece in Health Affairs blog entitled “Shaping the 2020 National Vaccine Plan.” It explores the progress to date against the 2010 National Vaccine Plan (NVP), recurring challenges, and the 2020 NVP.

The purpose of the NVP is to help guide national efforts of federal, state, local, multinational, and non-governmental partners to improve access to and uptake of vaccines. The 2020 NVP is currently being developed by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy and will set forth coordinated plans for the next 5 years.

Avalere’s authors noted the following opportunities for the 2020 NVP to:

  • Address vaccine hesitancy
  • Reduce immunization access barriers (both in the form of coverage disparities and provider implementation challenges)
  • Serve as a platform for communicating successes and highlighting the factors that contribute to their success improving vaccine uptake and development
