Christie Teigland Receives AMCP Platinum Award
Summary
Christie Teigland, PhD, vice president, Advanced Analytics, recently received the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s (AMCP) prestigious Platinum Award for her research entitled “Association of Socioeconomic and Clinical Factors with Rates of High-Risk Medication Use in Medicare Advantage Plans.”The Platinum Award recognizes the top four highest rated abstracts accepted for presentation at the AMCP Annual Meeting.
The study’s objective was to investigate the clinical and socioeconomic/sociodemographic (SES) factors associated with differences in high-risk medication (HRM) use among dual-eligible vs. non-dual-eligible Medicare Advantage (MA) plan members.
The analysis used data for 827,238 MA members (27.6% dual-eligible members and 72.4% non-dual) extracted from Inovalon’s MORE 2 Registry, which includes medical and pharmacy data for more than 130 million patients across the U.S. The study uniquely utilized additional data on SES characteristics at the near-neighborhood level, along with community resource availability such as shortage of primary care physicians.
The Findings
- The rate of high-risk medication use was 16% higher in dual-eligible members
- HRM rates were not statistically associated with the percent of dual-eligible members in the plan
- Factors contributing most to the performance included disability, bipolar/major depression, schizophrenia, COPD, anxiety, and alcohol/drug/substance abuse
- There were certain characteristics of dual-eligibles that reduced the disparity in rates
Teigland’s research will be featured in AMCP’s upcoming special issue of the Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy.
