Avalere Publishes Viewpoint on Personalizing Value in Cancer Care

Summary

To achieve the goals of value-based care, the patient voice must be incorporated into clinical decision-making by embedding shared decision-making (SDM) as a routine part of clinical practice.

On July 10, Avalere published a viewpoint in the Journal of Participatory Medicine to highlight the need to better incorporate patient preferences into routine clinical decision-making in oncology, assess the current SDM policy landscape and business imperative for doing so, and propose a roadmap for next steps in research. We review progress to date by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in furthering SDM and identify future opportunities. Better incorporation of patient preferences into routine clinical decision-making reinforces related Avalere multi-stakeholder collaboratives, such as the Patient-Perspective Value Framework Initiative and the work we are leading to improve cost-of-care conversations between patients and their care teams.
